Death toll rises after earthquake: More than 600 people killed

(Patria) - Heartbreaking photos and footage from Afghanistan following a devastating earthquake measuring six on the Richter scale have shocked the world.

According to the latest information, at least 622 people have died, while more than 1,500 have been injured.

It is feared that the death toll is not final, given that information is still arriving from remote parts of the country, the BBC reported.

The earthquake struck the northeastern province of Kunar, where rescuers are searching through the rubble of homes for survivors.

- The number of dead and injured is high, but given that the area is difficult to access, our teams are still on the ground - said Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman.
