Ramadan Chronicles: Non-violence is the rule, endurance a necessity

Anyone who wishes to educate themselves spiritually must become familiar with the way Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, treated people, states Dr. Tariq Ramadan in the 17th installment of the Ramadan Chronicles, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).

- He spread peace, sought to reconcile people, served them, treated them justly and with dignity. However, he faced great attacks and rejection. His friends were also persecuted and tortured. The example of Bilal is well-known, who was a slave and accepted Islam, for which he was tortured in the most severe way. They placed a huge stone on his chest, but he kept saying „One, One“ meaning that he would not give up faith in the One God – says Dr. Ramadan.

 He also recalled the example of the family of Yasir, who were also tortured and ultimately killed for their faith.

- As he passed by them, the Prophet said: „Be patient, family of Yasir! Our meeting is in Paradise!“ With these words, he conveyed to them that he currently had no power to help them, but that their patience would lead them to mercy, forgiveness, and reward from the Almighty – states Dr. Ramadan.

No matter how much people rejected him, the Prophet, peace be upon him, approached them and treated them in the best possible way.

- As we commemorate the Battle of Badr, we must remember these examples. As Muslims, we must endure attacks in a non-violent manner, if possible. When, and if, we are attacked with weapons, we must defend ourselves, with the aim of survival. The oppressors choose the means; the victims and the oppressed have no choice but to try to survive and defend themselves, and in what way depends on the means the oppressors use. That is the message of Islam: non-violence is the rule, endurance a necessity. May Allah help us remember this now as we fast – emphasized this distinguished professor, concluding his message with the words: And do not forget to tell those you love that you love them!
