Working non-stop: Women from "Gračaničko keranje" will produce more than 10,000 Srebrenica flowers

Nearly 200 women from the Association „Gračaničko keranje“ have been working almost non-stop for several weeks producing Srebrenica flowers, a symbol that recalls the genocide of Bosniaks from Srebrenica and surrounding areas in 1995.

Azemina Ahmedbegović, president of the Association, told the news agency Patria that the Association's activists will produce more than 10,000 flowers, which they will sell at symbolic prices in Sarajevo in front of the BBI Center, as well as in Bihać, Tuzla, Mostar, and Zenica.

- We have also sent a larger number of flowers to our diaspora. This symbol means a lot to them. They see it as an ID card, something that connects them to their homeland – says Azemina.

She regrets, she says, that the state does not finance the production of the Srebrenica flower, so that the Association could distribute it for free.

- That way it would reach more people – says Azemina.

The Srebrenica flower has grown into a globally popular symbol, recalling the innocent Bosniaks killed during the genocide in eastern Bosnia in 1995, during the onslaught of Serbian forces on the UN-protected zone.

The idea for the flower was given by the former reisu-l-ulema in BiH, Mustafa Cerić, after which ownership was transferred to the women of the Association „Gračaničko keranje“. The Srebrenica flower was worn on July 11 by the world's top officials, such as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, it appeared on the lapel of Pope Francis, as well as many other religious leaders and world statesmen, writes NAP.
