Media operating in an atmosphere free of fear is crucial for a healthy democracy

Following this week's gatherings of journalists in Bosnia and Herzegovina, primarily in Banja Luka and Sarajevo, with further meetings planned, the Chargé d'Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Renzo Daviddi, stated that they welcome the strong, visible, and widespread commitment of the domestic media community throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, as one of the key pillars of civil society in the country, reports Patria News Agency.

- We encourage them to continue speaking openly about all issues concerning the media sector. The European Union Delegation to BiH and the Office of the European Union Special Representative fully support freedom of expression and fully support journalists who do their job professionally. Respect for the internationally accepted principles on which journalistic practice is based is of utmost importance - it is stated.

Actions designed to intimidate media outlets and journalists themselves, as well as their perpetrators, are anti-democratic and reprehensible. For a healthy democracy and freedom of expression, the ability of the media to operate without fear and pressure in terms of favouring any side is crucial. The European Union Delegation to BiH and the Office of the European Union Special Representative emphasize that freedom of expression is carefully considered in the process of accession to the European Union. Actions aimed at restricting media freedom are, therefore, actions against achieving progress towards membership in the European Union - it was announced.

Recent events have opened a wide range of issues, including police conduct, judicial procedures, allegations of unauthorized wiretapping, violations of fundamental rights, and accusations of corruption. Domestic authorities and law enforcement agencies in BiH should carefully consider and investigate all these issues. The public has the right to be informed about all outcomes. The European Union Delegation to BiH and the Office of the European Union Special Representative are closely monitoring these issues, including the context of accession to the European Union, and expect domestic authorities to ensure equality for all before the law.
