(Patria) - One conversation can change a day. One psychologist - a child's life. In the schools of Sarajevo Canton, that change is becoming a daily occurrence.
Just a few years ago, there were only seven psychologists working in the schools of Sarajevo Canton, and today there are 107. This figure is not just a number, but an indicator of a profound change in the approach to child care and their mental health.
School psychologists have become a pillar of support for students, a resource for teachers, and a safe haven for parents. This progress is the result of the systemic policy of the Ministry of Education and Upbringing of Sarajevo Canton and the support of the Government of Sarajevo Canton, which has been continuously strengthening the network of professional associates in schools for several years.
In this context, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the Institute for the Development of Pre-University Education of KS, in cooperation with the Ministry, organized professional development under the motto "Promotion and Protection of Mental Health in Schools".
Psychologists from primary and secondary schools in Sarajevo Canton gathered at the event to exchange experiences and present best practices from their schools. Numerous activities were showcased, from the use of short educational films on mental health to projects that connect students, teachers, and parents in jointly strengthening emotional resilience.
The cooperation with student councils and local communities was particularly highlighted, which in some cases resulted in the creation of manuals and materials such as the publication "You Are Not Alone".
Through constructive discussion after the presentations, participants exchanged ideas and empowered each other, especially younger colleagues who were given the opportunity to learn from real examples and experiences of their more experienced peers.
"Investing in the mental health of children and youth is not a luxury, but an obligation of modern society. Schools where psychologists work become places of trust, understanding, and growth. Our goal is for every child in Sarajevo Canton to have the support of a professional who will listen to them, understand them, and encourage them," stated the Ministry of Education and Upbringing of KS.
Every story shared at this event shows that investing in mental health builds a healthier and stronger school community, one where children feel safe, and teachers have the support to jointly shape schools that nurture both the minds and hearts of students.
