First UN man would bring peace and perspective to this region

Which are the active names for the Secretary-General of the United Nations who is to be appointed from the territory of Eastern Europe? Almost all countries from the former Yugoslavia have entered this race. Except for Bosnia and Herzegovina, writes the Patria news agency.

Vesna Pusić, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, has not worked for the UN, but she has a certain kind of international authority. Pusić decided to run before all other candidates from the Balkans, and Croatia confirmed this. Danilo Türk, former President of Slovenia in the term from 2007 to 2012, is the candidate of the country. He served one term as President of the UN Security Council, was Slovenia's ambassador to the UN, and finally Assistant Secretary-General of the UN for Political Affairs.

Türk, Kerim, Lukšić...

Danilo Türk has the best chances because, compared to other candidates from our region, he had the most serious career in the United Nations.

Macedonia nominated Srđan Kerim, its former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and then former President of the UN General Assembly from September 2007 to September 2008. This is about Srgjan Hasanoglu Kerim, a distinguished Macedonian diplomat, who has serious chances in this election.

In Serbia, a polemic immediately began regarding the candidate, and that is Vuk Jeremić, who has already run to be the first man of the UN. By all accounts, the new "progressive" government does not want him. This was publicly stated by Tomislav Nikolić, President of Serbia.

Igor Lukšić, the young Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, is a very serious candidate.

Haris Silajdžić would be a serious option

Among candidates from other parts of Eastern Europe, Irina Bokova and Miroslav Lajčák are mentioned very seriously. Lajčák was once the High Representative in BiH and everything is known about him. Lajčák regained popularity in BiH through his activities. Irina Bokova was the Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, permanent representative of Bulgaria to UNESCO, and then the first woman director of UNESCO and the first person to head UNESCO from Eastern Europe. She is among the most powerful polyglots of all candidates and speaks English, French, Spanish, and Russian.

In terms of language knowledge and communication skills, only Haris Silajdžić could have competed with her, had he been the candidate of BiH. His name was already mentioned in past elections for UN Secretary-General and he was a very serious candidate, although this was not discussed objectively in Bosnia and Herzegovina at all.

Why is BiH without its own man in this race? Because the usual obstructions from the RS prevail here, so any talk about a Bosnian candidate was immediately abandoned. It would be extremely significant if the election were to come precisely from the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Whoever it might be, they would treat the problems of this region seriously. The prospects of the entire region would open up towards peace and cooperation.
