Youth protests in 150 countries ahead of UN climate summit

(Patria) – As world leaders prepare for the climate summit in New York, millions of young people around the world will take to the streets on Friday, demanding faster action on climate change.

The protests, which will take place in 150 countries, were sparked by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who will attend the summit in the US.

'Soon it will be dawn on Friday, 20 September 2019. Good luck Australia, Philippines, Japan and the Pacific Islands. You go first!', Thunberg posted on her Instagram.

Protests are also scheduled in European capitals such as London, Berlin and Paris.

Young Swede Greta Thunberg has become a global symbol in the fight against climate change. It all began in August 2018 when she protested alone in front of the Swedish parliament. Since then, her struggle has grown into the 'Fridays for Future' movement, joined by young people around the world.

While young people around the world demonstrate on Friday for the third time, Greta will lead the march in New York, where the UN will hold a climate summit next week attended by world leaders.

Scientists say global warming due to the burning of fossil fuels has already led to droughts and heatwaves, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and floods.

Carbon emissions reached a record level last year, despite warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that output levels must be significantly reduced in the next 12 years to stabilise the climate, reports Euronews.
