25 years since the massacre in Halači street: No one has ever been held accountable for the committed crimes

Families, friends, neighbours, as well as delegations from the Canton and City of Sarajevo and the Municipality of Stari Grad laid flowers today and paid tribute by reciting fatiha and observing a minute of silence for the Sarajevo victims at the site of the massacre in Halači street near number 5 in Baščaršija, reports Patria agency.

At that fateful place, 25 years ago, their lives were lost: Dženan Aljević, Mahir Ferhatović, Tarik Harba, Esma Muratović, Meliha Muratović-Spahić, Almasa Spahić, Mahira Spahić, and Ismet Suljić.

- On this day in 1992, a horrific crime was committed at this location, in which eight of our fellow citizens were killed, two of whom were children. And to make the tragedy even greater, on that day, the Spahić family lost four members, specifically three sisters Almasa, Mahira, and Meliha, and Meliha's seven-year-old daughter Esma were killed - reminded, with tears in his eyes, the president of the Association of Parents of Children Killed in Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995, Fikret Grabovica.

He said that what hurts the most is the fact that for this crime, as for all others, no one has ever been held accountable.

- Every street in Sarajevo is Halači. This is proof that targets were not chosen here, not military targets, but residents of our city were killed. Every Sarajevo street and building bears scars and wounds from that period of aggression - emphasized the Chairman of the Municipal Council in Stari Grad, Jusuf Pušina.

He stated that not only the parents and families of the killed should come to the massacre sites, but also elementary and high school students, university students, and citizens, so they can learn the true story, because only it can bring us back to reality and offer a future.

- We cannot live in illusions that nothing happened here, and we can only forgive if someone deserves it - said Chairman Pušina.
