Remains of Kjašif Smajlović Found: I fear they are coming for me, I hear their footsteps

Kjašif Smajlović, a correspondent of Oslobođenje from Zvornik, was killed in the first days of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was the first journalist casualty of the war in BiH, reports the Patria news agency. 

It was April 9, 1992. That day, Serbian military and paramilitary formations entered Zvornik after several days of shelling. At 8:20 AM, Kjašif dictated the news of the fall of Zvornik to the secretary at the Tuzla regional bureau of "Oslobođenje", Selveta Ahmedinović, because he could not reach Sarajevo. He concluded that report with a chilling message.

"I am afraid, Sele (that was how he addressed the secretary – Selveta), that they are coming for me too. I hear their footsteps, they are heading towards the bureau. I fear this is my last report," reported Smajlović, whose remains have only now been found.

The remains of Kjašif Smajlović were found at the Kazan-bašča site several months ago in the Zvornik area, confirmed for N1 the Acting Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Missing Persons of BiH, Amor Mašović.

He added that DNA results arrived today, which with undoubted accuracy confirm that it is Kjašif Smajlović.
