Prof. Bećirević: Some officials are 'washing' their conscience by coming to Srebrenica, and genocide denial continues

(Patria) - The funeral prayer and burial of seven victims of the genocide committed in the summer of 1995 were held in the cemetery of the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center. Among those present in Srebrenica today, to pay tribute to the innocently killed victims, are numerous domestic and international politicians.

"It is significant, but it should be warned that if some concrete steps and actions by representatives of all states towards genocide deniers do not follow, it could turn into mere commemorative diplomacy," believes Edina Bećirević, a professor of security studies at the Faculty of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Security Studies.

She added that the role of the international community in the commission of genocide is significant.

"We cannot say that a certain number of these officials who were in Srebrenica today did not come to 'wash' their conscience because of the role of the international community towards BiH. The EU continues to function in a way that satisfies the demands of genocide deniers in Srebrenica. All solutions had the same goals in the background as those who committed genocide," she said, adding that Russia plays an active role in denying the genocide.

Otherwise, during today's commemoration, the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Caspar Veldkamp, once again apologized on behalf of the country for not preventing the genocide in July 1995.
