Prodanović: BiH has brought the migrant crisis under control

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Chairman of the Joint Committee for Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH Lazar Prodanović announced on the eve of December 18, International Migrants Day, that the world is permanently facing a migrant crisis, the resolution of which is often in serious conflict with all valid international conventions for the protection of human rights.

- For more than two decades, December 18 has been celebrated worldwide as International Migrants Day, a day that the UN and all member states observe by calling for respect for the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, as well as for respect for all other international documents that protect the endangered rights of this category of people - Prodanović reminded.

He stated that today, migration and migrants are an issue that the entire planet is dealing with, as developed countries around the world are facing a million-strong influx of people who, in search of a better life, are fleeing wars, poverty, lack of food, water, and the consequences of climate change.

- The unfortunate scenes that we had the opportunity to see at the border between Poland and Belarus in recent months, we have also seen in previous years at our borders, as well as at the borders of countries on the so-called Balkan migrant route - Prodanović added.

He emphasized that the years-long migrant crisis, which BiH faced, has been brought under control this year through the joint work of domestic and European institutions, and with a significant contribution from international and domestic non-governmental organizations dealing with this issue.

According to him, International Migrants Day is an opportunity for all of us to be reminded of the importance of respecting the rights of migrants, especially vulnerable categories such as women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, it was announced from the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH.

- I am convinced that the experience that government institutions at all levels in BiH have gained in facing the challenges of the migrant crisis will be best utilized in the years to come - Prodanović concluded.
