Problems in Schools: Education Workers Become Victims of Parental Dissatisfaction Over Grades, Amendment to the Rulebook Sought

(Patria) - The Independent Union of Primary Education and Upbringing of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Cantonal Committee of the Independent Union of Primary Education and Upbringing of Sarajevo Canton issued a press release following an open letter sent to the Union, the Ministry of Education and Upbringing, and the Institute for Pre-University Education by education workers of the "Fatima Gunić" Primary School.

"Due to the increasingly pronounced negative attitude of certain parents towards education workers, schools are experiencing a serious disruption of the educational process and work atmosphere. When parents belittle or disrespect teachers and professors, it can demotivate teaching staff and affect the quality of education students receive. Criticism that is not constructive, excessive interference in work methodology, or distrust of teachers' expertise can hinder cooperation between the school and parents. Furthermore, parents express dissatisfaction with their children's grades, which can create significant pressure on education workers. Frequent complaints about grades, especially those that are emotionally intense or aggressive, can contribute to increased stress among teachers, who often face pressure to justify their grading criteria, which can undermine their professional integrity and autonomy in the classroom.

In addition, constant parental pressure can lead to situations where grades begin to be adjusted to expectations, rather than realistically reflecting student knowledge. This can compromise the objectivity of the educational system and reduce students' motivation to truly make an effort and acquire knowledge. Teachers who frequently face parental dissatisfaction may feel frustration, demotivation, and insecurity in their work, which can affect the quality of teaching. Also, a negative parental attitude can be passed on to children, who will show less respect for their teachers/professors, further complicating the learning process and classroom discipline.

Constructive cooperation between parents and teachers, based on mutual respect, is key to creating a positive educational environment where children feel supported and motivated to learn. Open dialogue and understanding contribute to better communication, problem-solving, and a common goal – quality education for every child. Instead of pressure and conflict, it is important for parents to establish a relationship based on constructive communication. Open dialogue, understanding grading criteria, and joint efforts to provide students with learning support are key to a healthy educational environment. When parents respect the professional assessment of teachers and direct their complaints towards improving the learning process, rather than just changing grades, all participants in the educational system can work in a positive and productive environment.

Indeed, education workers from one primary school in Sarajevo have publicly raised their voices and issued an appeal to relevant institutions to seriously consider the position of education workers in relation to the increasingly frequent pressures and attacks they face, primarily from parents, which directly affects their professional dignity, safety, and psycho-physical health," the Union stated.
