The problem is dead animals, the water is too deep for machinery and too shallow for boats

Fahrudin Solak, acting director of the Federal Civil Protection Administration (FUCZ), told the Patria News Agency that the past night was the first calm one since the floods began, although FUCZ services and units are constantly on the ground.

- In the Posavina Canton, we are working on disposing of dead animals, and that is our burning issue now. We currently have about 10 specialized teams on the ground. People are making enormous efforts, because the water is not deep enough for boats with cranes, nor is it shallow enough for machinery to enter. We have a big problem and we are considering building platforms that would be pulled by water scooters to remove the dead animals. We might rent some scooters if the water doesn't recede – Solak says.

He further states that it is very difficult to approach and that they are working in almost impossible conditions.

- Considering that seven or eight days have passed since the floods, a terrible stench is spreading. We have eight specialized vehicles for transporting animal waste to the incinerator in Inđija, but we cannot fill these trucks completely, so we fill half a truck and send it immediately, just to prevent the stench from spreading – Solak says.

The second biggest problem on the ground is unexploded ordnance (UXO), of which FUCZ teams have already removed dozens.

- This problem will not be resolved even in two or three months. FUCZ has specialized teams on the ground, and minefields have been disturbed, that is definite. The water has literally taken them out of the ground, and now we are finding them in the city in places where they shouldn't be. We are removing UXO. This is no longer treated as a marked minefield, which poses a big problem for us – Solak adds.

The most endangered areas in terms of mines and UXO are the valleys of the Spreča and Bosna rivers from Žepče to Maglaj and Zavidovići, as well as Doboj Jug.

- These are the most endangered areas, which does not mean they are not present elsewhere. That is why we give lectures to volunteers who are cleaning on how to recognize and behave in such situations – Solak added.
