Liquidation of Bosniak intellectuals began before the aggression on BiH

On January 12, 1992, the funeral prayer was held for the BiH intellectual Abdulah Kovačević from Čelić, who was killed by Serbian intelligence agents because he tried to inform the Bosniak population about the crimes being prepared against them, writes the BiH news agency Patria.

Kovačević is considered the first victim of the Serbian regime in northeastern Bosnia, where only a few months later, some of the first and largest crimes occurred during the last bloody Serbian aggression against BiH, which began in 1992.

Kovačević is considered one of the most educated Bosniaks in the Bijeljina region, who as early as 1990 tried to warn Bosniaks that the noose was tightening around them. However, he mysteriously disappeared at the end of 1991.

The search for him lasted about a month. After demonstrations in front of the municipal building in Lopare, the then president of SDS (Kerović), later a Chetnik duke, told the gathered crowd in front of the municipality:

- Don't worry about anything, you will get Abdulah alive or dead. Bosniaks knew he was dead.

Two weeks later, hunters found Kovačević on the slopes of Vlastak on Majevica. He had been thrown from a helicopter that had been circling over Majevica that day. Eyewitnesses describe that crosses were carved into his body, his body was burned with fire, full of fractures and bruises.

More than ten thousand Bosniaks attended his funeral in Vražići, which was held on January 12, 1992. His killers were never found or prosecuted. A few months after his death, the criminal Željko Ražnatović Arkan and his units, in cooperation with the local police and army, killed and expelled thousands of Bosniaks from this part of BiH, writes Patria.
