40 years ago at Grbavica, Željezničar – Arsenal match was played

40 years ago on this day, August 15, 1976, Sarajevo football club "Željezničar" played a friendly match against London's Arsenal. The great Arsenal visited Grbavica on the occasion of the 55th birthday of the football club "Željezničar". The result was 1-1. The only goal for Željezničar was scored by Džemal Šerbo. Arsenal did not deliver the performance the Sarajevo public expected. Long passes, high jumps, precise shots, and sharp strikes towards the "blues'" goal were missing, reports the Patria agency.

In its rich history, Željezničar has played against many famous clubs. It should be emphasized that Inter Milan graced the 50th birthday of the football club "Željezničar" with a visit to Košev. The match was played on June 16, 1971, and ended with a score of 3-3. On September 19, 1969, FK "Željezničar" played a friendly match against Brazilian Santos, led by one of the best footballers in the world of all time – Pelé. The Santos team was a triple world champion at the time. The match against Santos was played on the day marking the 47th anniversary of Sarajevo's "Blues".
