39 years since the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo began its work

The Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo is the oldest and most prestigious institution of higher Islamic education in Southeast Europe. It builds upon centuries-old tradition of Islamic education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which began with the construction of the first mosques, tekkes, and elementary schools (muallim-hana) in the second half of the 15th century, continued with the construction of madrasas, hanikahs, Daru-l-Qur'an and Daru-l-Hadith schools in the 16th century, and approached European education models through the Sharia Judicial College, the higher level of Alija Gazi Husrevbeg's madrasa, and the Higher Islamic Sharia-Theological School, in whose building it is located, reports Patria News Agency.

The Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo was founded based on the decisions of the Supreme Assembly and the Supreme Islamic Authority of the Islamic Community in the SFRY in 1977. The Riyaset of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina took over the founder's rights. The Faculty began its work on 15 Shawwal 1397 / September 29, 1977, under the name Islamic Theological Faculty in Sarajevo.

In the previous period, the Faculty adapted to the needs of the community and the demands of the time, which resulted in changes and additions to the curriculum and the diversification of studies. Thus, in the academic year 1992/1993, a pedagogical department was added to the theological department. In the academic year 1994/1995, postgraduate studies were opened at the Faculty.
The Faculty began its work on 15 Shawwal 1397 / September 29, 1977, under the name Islamic Theological Faculty in Sarajevo.

In the academic year 2002/2003, a thorough reform of the entire undergraduate study was carried out, the credit system was introduced, and departments were established. Based on Article 17 of the Law on the University, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Physical Education of the SR Bosnia and Herzegovina verified the work of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo by decision number: UP-I-03-612-227 of December 5, 1991.

By signing the Agreement on mutual rights and obligations, on September 29, 2004, the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo was included in the University of Sarajevo as an associated member in its current structure and with the retention of its legal entity status.
