32 years ago, aggressor killed 16-year-old Samir Mišić at Vraca, he wanted to be a policeman and protect his country

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The 32nd anniversary of the attack on the school of the then MUP RBiH for training personnel will be marked at the FMUP Police Academy in Vraca starting at 10:30 AM. At the time of the attack, there were about 800 students in the school, and about 400 were under 18 years of age.

In 2016, a memorial to Samir Mišić was erected in the Center's premises, the first victim of the attack on the MUP RBiH school within the Vraca Police Academy, but also the first victim of the aggression against Sarajevo and BiH.

Sixteen-year-old Samir Mišić, a student and member of the 20th class, was killed on April 5, 1992, and was posthumously awarded the "Golden Police Badge".

According to official records, the attack on the school was ordered by the then Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska, Momčilo Mandić. The Special Unit of the MUP RS participated in the attack. At that time, there were about 840 students, professors, and trainees in the school…

The attack on the school began shortly after 3 PM.

School principal Husein Balić refused to surrender. Armed with school weapons used for training, he resisted the Serbian special forces led by Milenko Karišik. Just a few days earlier, Karišik had been Balić's colleague and taught the students he was now shooting at. In one statement, Balić said that they had traitors within their ranks at the school.

In the attack on the students, the special forces were supported by Duke Slavko Aleksić with his army, the Serb population from Vraca, as well as Serb policemen to whom Radomir Spaić, commander of the Sarajevo Fire Brigade, had distributed firefighter uniforms. School principal Husein Balić appealed for help for himself and the students, but could not get any. An unfair fight ensued without interruption until the early evening hours.

JNA launched an attack on students

The commander of the 4th Corps of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), General Vojislav Đurđevac, issued an order to the commander of the 49th JNA Brigade to move with a battalion of soldiers towards the school in Vraca, allegedly to prevent conflict.

However, the opposite happened. Members of the 49th JNA Brigade joined the attacks on the police school. Professors were captured and taken to Pale. Before being exchanged, they were tortured for five days.

The students were held captive in the "Radojka Lakić" elementary school near the Police School. As recounted by principal Balić, a Serb fighter was playing with a rifle while guarding the captured students, and the rifle went off, hitting Mišić in the head.

At the funeral at the Bare cemetery in Sarajevo, none of Samir's relatives could make it from the blocked Rogatica. He was laid to rest in the grave by Police School principal Balić and several other professors after their release from captivity.
