26 years ago, Zuko Džumhur left us

Due to his versatility, genius, and simplicity, Zuko Džumhur is said to be the last Renaissance creator from this region. He traveled the world his whole life, wrote and told stories, explored, connected people and broke down barriers, writes the BiH news agency Patria.

He was born on September 24, 1921, in Konjic. He comes from a respected old ulema family. He finished elementary school and lower gymnasium in Belgrade (where his father worked as an imam), and finished higher gymnasium in Sarajevo in 1939. He started studying law, but transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts and graduated. He published his first drawings in Narodna armija in 1947, and since then he has collaborated as a cartoonist and illustrator in Jež, Borba, Politika, Oslobođenje, Danas magazine, NIN as a regular contributor and editor. He published more than 10,000 cartoons.

Writer Miljenko Jergović wrote about Zuko Džumhur that he was "a writer who, over his human lifespan, lived a thousand previous years and who, besides his own homeland, had countless native lands".

Džumhur died on 27.11.1989 in Herceg-Novi, and was buried two days later in the Konjic city cemetery Musala, next to his father Abduselam and mother Vasvija.

Zuko is most remembered in BiH as the screenwriter and host of the series "Hodoljublje" on TV Sarajevo.
