(Patria) - By decision of the International Arbitration Tribunal, the city of Brčko gained district status under the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina on this day, March 5, 1999.
Roberts B. Owen (presiding arbitrator at the Arbitration Tribunal for Brčko) made the decision that the Municipality of Brčko becomes a "neutral territory" with self-government under the jurisdiction of the state. In this way, both entities "gained" territory, although they "lost" administrative power.
This decision for Brčko to become a district caused sharp protests in RS.
