18 years ago Princess Diana visited landmine victims in Bosnia and Herzegovina

18 years ago, from August 8 to 10, the Princess of Wales Diana paid a three-day visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she visited victims of landmines left over from the aggression against BiH, writes the Bosnian news agency Patria.

She had an emotional meeting with a mother who had lost a child, and also visited Sarajevo cemeteries and graveyards.

In her last official letter, which the princess sent to humanitarian Dilys Cheetham before her tragic death, she reflected on her visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the letter dated August 11, 1997, Princess Diana wrote that she was deeply moved by this visit.

- While I was in Bosnia and Herzegovina, I did not have time to visit the area around Mostar, but I managed to visit landmine victims and their families. I could not help but be deeply touched by this experience - the princess wrote at the time.

She also wrote that after that trip she „made a firm decision to ensure that the world does not forget those who have been unnecessarily maimed by this terrible weapon and who will need care and support in the years to come“.

Just a few weeks after this visit, she died in a traffic accident in Paris on August 31, 1997, under very strange circumstances.

Mrs. Cheetham, who died in 2006, sold the letter at auction to raise money for landmine victims.
