120 years since the birth of Hamza Humo

On Wednesday, it will be 120 years since the birth of Hamza Humo, one of the greatest Bosnian-Herzegovinian writers and journalists, writes the BH news agency Patria.

He was born on December 30, 1895, in Mostar, where he attended mekteb, elementary school, and gymnasium. In 1914, he was arrested and transferred to Hungary (Komarovo), and in 1915, he was mobilized into the Austro-Hungarian army. Until the end of the war, he served as a clerk and interpreter in a hospital in Vienna. After the war, he returned to Mostar and graduated, then went to study art history in Zagreb, then in Vienna, and finally in Belgrade.

From 1923, Humo was the editor of the newspaper Zabavnik, and from 1923 to 1931, he was the editor of the magazine Gajret, and then a journalist for Politika until the war.

He spent World War II in Cimu near Mostar. From 1945, he edited the Bosniak newspaper Novo doba, after which he was the editor of Radio Sarajevo and the director of the Art Gallery.

They say that Humo did most of his work in the period between the two world wars. During that period, he published several poetry books and his most famous and significant work, the lyrical novel "Grozdanin kikot" (1927), which went through several editions and was translated into many languages.

Hamza Humo died in Sarajevo on January 19, 1970. Today, a large number of streets and schools in BiH bear his name, writes Patria.
