Recommendations for the public due to high temperatures

Due to extremely high temperatures that will exceed 40 degrees Celsius in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, an orange weather alert has been issued, and the public is advised to avoid being outdoors between 12 PM and 6 PM. If you must leave your home, protect your head and carry a bottle of water, writes Patria News Agency. 

It is recommended to wear light and transparent cotton clothing in bright colors and long sleeves when going outside. Due to the extremely high UV index, use sunscreen and head coverings (hats, caps) as the most at-risk groups and people with sensitive skin can get second-degree burns in less than fifteen minutes.

People suffering from chronic and cardiovascular diseases should properly take their previously prescribed therapy.

If blood pressure suddenly rises due to the nature and conditions in which blood vessels dilate, it is a warning sign of a deteriorating health condition, and in such cases, one should contact the nearest family doctor to avoid myocardial infarction.

Even healthy individuals might find it extremely difficult to tolerate the heat. If chronic fatigue appears, strict rest and cessation of all activities are recommended. In the worst-case scenario, chronic fatigue can cease and turn into general weakness and exhaustion due to very high air temperatures. Avoid all strenuous physical exertion and sun exposure during the hottest part of the day, especially between 10 AM and 6 PM.

If you are traveling, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of non-carbonated fluids, preferably water and teas.

Avoid heavy, greasy food fried in deep oil, and during the day, to better tolerate the heat, eat as much seasonal fruit as possible and drink teas. Towards the end of the day, introduce light, cooked food in the form of quality and previously well-washed and thermally processed vegetables. For meat, opt for chicken or turkey as the easiest types for the stomach. Avoid very cold drinks due to chilling the throat and stomach lining.
