Great friend of Bosnia and Herzegovina Janusz Bugajski passes away

(Patria) - Janusz Bugajski, an American political analyst and publicist of Polish origin, one of the most prominent experts on Southeast Europe and relations in the Western Balkans, has passed away.

Born in 1954 in Great Britain, Bugajski was a long-time associate of organizations such as the Jamestown Foundation and the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) in Washington. He was the author of more than twenty books and numerous analyses on transitional societies, security challenges, and foreign policy processes in this part of Europe.

Bosnia and Herzegovina held a special place in his analytical work. For years, Bugajski warned that BiH was "the most endangered link in the Western Balkans" and that its political instability could have wider regional consequences. In his writings, he emphasized that the international community must not passively observe the blockades and institutional crises that hinder the country's progress.

He strongly supported BiH's membership in NATO and the European Union, considering it the only realistic framework that could guarantee the country's long-term stability and security. Bugajski warned that "frozen conflicts" and ethnic divisions in BiH serve the interests of external actors, especially Russia, and are a key threat not only to peace in BiH but also to the wider region.

On several occasions, he analyzed the role of leaders from BiH, pointing out that "nationalist policies produce lasting dependence on international intervention" and prevent the development of a functional state.

As a consultant and lecturer, Bugajski participated in numerous international gatherings dedicated to the Balkans and the democratization of post-conflict societies. His works, including the books Balkan Ghosts Revisited and Failed State: Bosnia’s Crisis and the International Response, have been used in academic and political analyses across Europe and the United States.

His work remains an important source for understanding political processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the relationship of great powers towards this region, writes politicki.ba.
