Professor at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo Orhan Bajraktarević passed away

(Patria) - Long-time professor at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo Orhan Bajraktarević passed away today at the age of 70.

He was born in Špionica, Srebrenik, on May 29, 1956, where he completed elementary school. He completed Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa, a five-year program, and the Faculty of Philosophy (philosophy and sociology) in Sarajevo.

He stayed for study specialization on behalf of the Republican Institute for International Exchange - Islamic philosophy and Arabic language field - at the University of Cairo (1986-1988). He attended postgraduate studies in Sarajevo, Cairo, and Zagreb.

He obtained his Master's degree at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, where he defended his thesis "Ibn Rushd and the Problem of the Destruction of Philosophy by Ghazali (Two Philosophical-Polemical Writings within Arabic-Islamic Medieval Philosophy)" on May 22, 1998.

He obtained his Doctorate at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo on July 7, 2011, defending his thesis "The Influence of Ibn Rushd on the Development of Modern Arabic-Islamic Philosophy".

He was an interpreter for the Arabic language in Libya (1982-1984) and an interpreter for the Arabic language in Banja Luka in 1985.

He was the editor-in-chief of the Islamic Information Newspaper "Preporod" in the period 1991-1992, and then an assistant in the subjects Islamic Philosophy and Tasawwuf at the Faculty of Islamic Theology in Sarajevo (1988-1998).

He was also a senior assistant in the subjects Islamic Philosophy I and II, Islamic Philosophy with Tasawwuf at the Faculty of Islamic Theology in Sarajevo (1998-2002), a lecturer in the subjects Islamic Philosophy I and II, Islamic Philosophy with Tasawwuf (2003-2011) at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo, an assistant professor in the subjects Islamic Philosophy, Classical Islamic Philosophy, Contemporary Islamic Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy with Tasawwuf, Philosophy of Ethics/Akhlaq at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Sarajevo (2012-2016), and an associate professor in the same or slightly modified subjects (2016-2021).

He participated in numerous international symposia and conferences.

He is the author of several books and several dozen articles on philosophy, Islamic philosophy, culture, Islamic theology, culture and civilization, ethics and aesthetics, Islamology, and Oriental studies.

He was awarded the honorary title of Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences.
