(Patria) - European Parliament President David Sassoli (66) passed away after midnight in Italy, confirmed his spokesperson Roberto Cuillo via Twitter.
It was announced on Monday that Sassoli has been in hospital since December 26 due to serious complications with his immune system, and he passed away an hour and 15 minutes after midnight in the same hospital in Aviano, where he was hospitalized. The Italian politician was treated in a French hospital in September for pneumonia, Reuters reports.
He served as President of the European Parliament since 2019, and his term was ending this month.
Sassoli was an advocate for the accession of Western Balkan countries to the EU.
