Momčilo Krajišnik has passed away

BANJA LUKA, (Patria) - Momčilo Krajišnik, a convicted war criminal and the first president of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, passed away this morning in Banja Luka, confirmed by the University Clinical Centre of Republika Srpska.

"We inform the public and the media that this morning, 15.9.2020, at 06:00 AM in the Clinic for Intensive Medicine for Non-Surgical Fields of the UKC RS, Mr. Momčilo Krajišnik, the first president of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, passed away due to complications from the new coronavirus infection," the UKC RS announced.

Krajišnik was arrested on April 3, 2000, in an operation by French commandos within SFOR and detained in the prison of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague. He was charged with crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and on September 27, he was found guilty of extermination, murder, persecution on racial and religious grounds, deportations, and inhumane acts, as well as crimes against humanity.

He was sentenced to 27 years in prison. On March 17, 2009, the ICTY reduced his sentence to 20 years in prison. He was released on August 30, 2013, after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
