General of the Army of RBiH Enver Hadžihasanović passed away

(Patria) - Retired General of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Commander of the Third Corps Enver Hadžihasanović has passed away, retired General Nedžad Ajnadžić confirmed for Faktor.

Enver Hadžihasanović was born on July 7, 1950, in Zvornik, to father Besim and mother Refija.

After high school, he enrolled in the Land Army (KoV) JNA academy, which he completed in 1973 in Belgrade. After that, he was assigned to various duties in the JNA in Tuzla and Sarajevo. As a first lieutenant, he attended the Command Staff School in Belgrade. Upon completion of that school, he was promoted to the rank of major and assigned to the duty of battalion commander of the military police of the 7th Army of the JNA. In 1988, he was reassigned to the duty of chief of staff of the 49th motorized brigade.

After the transformation of this brigade into a mechanized brigade, at the end of 1989, he was appointed its commander. While performing this duty, he also attained the rank of lieutenant colonel.

In early April 1992, the JNA placed Enver Hadžihasanović under house arrest in Sarajevo. However, on April 8, 1992, he managed to escape from house arrest and deserted from the JNA.

Immediately after leaving the JNA, he joined the Territorial Defense of BiH. On November 14, 1992, he became the first commander of the Third Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina and held this position until November 1, 1993, when he was promoted to Chief of Staff of the Supreme Command of the Army of RBiH. In December 1993, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general.

With the formation of the Army of the Federation of BiH, Hadžihasanović became a member of its command. In May 1997, he was promoted to the rank of divisional general. Later, he was promoted to the rank of major general and completed his professional service in that rank, retiring in April 2000.

In 2006, Enver Hadžihasanović was sentenced to five years in prison by the Hague Tribunal on command responsibility for failing to take necessary and reasonable measures to punish subordinates for violations of the laws and customs of war against prisoners in Zenica and Bugojno in 1993 (murder and cruel treatment).

In April 2008, his sentence was reduced to three and a half years, and he was convicted for failing to prevent or punish cruel treatment of prisoners at the Music School in Zenica in 1993.

He was released on April 23, 2008, after serving his sentence. Other charges, the murder of Mladen Havranek and cruel treatment of six prisoners in the furniture store "Slavonija", as well as the murder of Dragan Popović and cruel treatment of prisoners in Orašac in October 1993, were dismissed because, by the unanimous opinion of the judges, they were not proven "beyond a reasonable doubt".
