Former High Representative Christian Schwarz-Schilling passes away

(Patria) - Former High Representative and long-time politician from Germany, Christian Schwarz-Schilling, has passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a political career marked by his engagement in the Balkans and clear stances on the post-war order of BiH, writes Politicki.ba.

Christian Schwarz-Schilling was born in 1930 in Innsbruck and built his political career within the ranks of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

During his decades-long engagement, he served as a member of the Bundestag, where he gained a reputation as a politician involved in telecommunications issues, as well as international relations.

He served as Federal Minister for Post and Telecommunications in Helmut Kohl's government from 1982 to 1992.

His political career was also marked by strong opposition to the international community's policies during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Schwarz-Schilling resigned from his ministerial post in 1992, protesting what he then stated was the West's inadequate response to the war and suffering in BiH.

After that, he actively engaged in diplomatic efforts and mediated various humanitarian and political initiatives related to the Balkans.

Over the years, he served as an international mediator and advisor, particularly advocating for a stronger engagement of the international community in stabilizing the situation in BiH.

He was appointed High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006, succeeding Paddy Ashdown. His mandate lasted until 2007 and was marked by a different approach compared to his predecessors.

Unlike the previous practice of imposing decisions, Schwarz-Schilling advocated for greater responsibility of domestic political actors and a reduction in the interventionism of the Office of the High Representative (OHR).

During his mandate, he often emphasized that political leaders in BiH must take responsibility for the country's reform processes and European path.

However, his approach was subject to criticism from parts of the international and domestic public, who believed that such a policy led to a stalemate in reforms.

Before his engagement in BiH, Schwarz-Schilling was also active in the business sector, particularly in telecommunications, and worked as a consultant and mediator in international projects.

His death marks the departure of one of the international actors who shaped the post-war period in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as a politician who, even during the war, warned of the need for more decisive action by the international community.
