(Patria) - Former US President George H. W. Bush, who presided over the end of the Cold War and defeated Saddam Hussein's Iraqi army, died on Friday at the age of 94, said a family spokesperson.
Bush, the 41st President of the United States, lived longer than any of his predecessors.
At the beginning of his presidency, from 1989 to 1993, the Berlin Wall fell and the USSR disintegrated, and he later led the Desert Storm military operation in the Persian Gulf, defeating Saddam Hussein's army.
He was a member of the Republican Party, and before becoming US President, he served, among other positions, as Vice President for two terms under President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989, US Ambassador to the United Nations, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
His son George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States.
