Academician Abdulah Šarčević passed away

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina informs the public of Bosnia and Herzegovina that a prominent and long-time full member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and professor emeritus of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Sarajevo, academician Abdulah Šarčević, passed away in Sarajevo.

Academician Šarčević was born in 1929 in Stari Majdan near Sanski Most. He completed his philosophy studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb in 1952. He defended his doctoral dissertation at the same University in 1967, titled: The Crisis of History and Contemporaneity - The Philosophy of Existence of Karl Jaspers.

He was a professor of philosophy at the gymnasium in Banja Luka from 1952 to 1954. From 1954 to 1959, he worked at the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje, and from 1959 at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. He held all university positions. He lectured at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona, USA. He participated in numerous symposiums around the world. He published over 28 works in the fields of contemporary philosophy, history of philosophy, philosophy of culture, philosophy of art and aesthetics, ontology and hermeneutic philosophy, philosophy of ethics, philosophy of language, etc.

For his outstanding contributions, he received several awards and decorations:

1. Charter for outstanding contributions to the progress of the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje,

2. Decorations for work at the University and the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo,

3. Charter of the publishing house “Svjetlost”,

4. “Veselin Masleša” Award,

5. April 6th Award of the City of Sarajevo,

6. July 27th Award.

The Ohrid Academy for Humanism awarded academician Abdulah Šarčević the World Award for Humanism for 2021.

Academician Šarčević was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1981, and a full member in 1990. This year, academician Šarčević was to be presented with a charter for 40 years of membership in the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The date and time of the burial of academician Abdulah Šarčević will be announced later.
