Assembly of the Medical Chamber Interrupted

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - At today's Assembly of the Medical Chamber of Sarajevo Canton, where a decision was to be made on the voting method for the election of the Chamber's new leadership, after the first round of voting, a portion of delegates from the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, led by Dr. Enra Suljić, director of the Institute for Scientific Research Development, left the hall.

Doctors who attended today's Assembly of the Chamber told Patria that 37 delegates voted for a secret ballot in the election of the Chamber's leadership, while 21 delegates voted for an open ballot.

- A commotion ensued, after which the majority of delegates from KCUS and Dr. Suljić left the Assembly. This meant there was no quorum for its further continuation - said one of the doctors.

Candidates for the president of the Medical Chamber are Prof. Dr. Ismet Gavrankapetanović from the General Hospital "Prim. dr. Abdulah Nakaš" and Dr. Zaim Jatić from the Public Institution Health Centers of Sarajevo Canton. About 150 doctors and the Independent Trade Union of Doctors of Medicine and Dentistry supported the candidacy of Dr. Gavrankapetanović. Dr. Jatić has the support of the General Director of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, Dr. Sebija Izetbegović.

Prior to the Chamber's Electoral Assembly, doctors, delegates of the Assembly, reported pressure on them from the Clinical Center. They emphasize that they were asked to support Dr. Jatić. It was also requested that the voting during the election of the Chamber's new leadership be open, "so that no delegate representing KCUS in the Chamber could secretly support Dr. Gavrankapetanović."

According to the Statute, the leadership of the Medical Chamber is elected by secret ballot, unless the delegates decide otherwise.

The current president, Dr. Raho Spahović, according to the Statute, remains in that position for another 60 days, after which a new Electoral Assembly will be scheduled.

Dr. Zaim Jatić is a specialist in family medicine. He is employed at the Health Centers of Sarajevo Canton. He works at the Health Center in Vrazova. He is the president of the Association of Family Medicine of Sarajevo Canton.

Professor Gavrankapetanović is a distinguished orthopedist. He graduated from the Medical Faculty in Sarajevo in 1986. He is a member of numerous domestic and international medical associations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of London, the British Orthopaedic Association, the European Society for Sports Traumatology, and a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society... He is currently employed at the General Hospital "Prim. dr. Abdulah Nakaš" in Sarajevo.
