(Patria) - The European Union's (EU) Special Representative for the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, Miroslav Lajčak, will leave his post at the end of August, it has been confirmed for Politicki.ba.
The news was first published by Radio Free Europe (RSE), citing reliable diplomatic sources.
Lajčak will be appointed EU Ambassador to Switzerland and will take up his duties on September 1st this year.
This former Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs was appointed European mediator in the dialogue in April 2020. His mandate expires at the end of August.
For now, there is no confirmation of who will succeed Lajčak. As RSE sources explained, discussions within the EU have already begun, but a decision will be made after the European elections scheduled for June this year.
The goal is for Lajčak's successor to be appointed before September 1st so as not to create an institutional vacuum, but the appointment of this person should await the election of a new head of diplomacy, a position currently held by Josep Borrell. The appointment of the new European head of diplomacy and other EU institution leaders will follow the European elections.
Lajčak's appointment is part of a major rotation in the European diplomatic service. According to RSE, 43 European ambassadors to various countries around the world were appointed this week.
Among them, as diplomatic sources confirmed to RSE, are the new ambassadors to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.
Luigi Soreca, the current EU ambassador to Albania, will head the delegation in BiH.
Politicki.ba reminds that the current EU ambassador to BiH, Johann Sattler, also came to this position from a post in Albania.
The EU office in Kosovo will be led by Estonian diplomat Aivo Orav. He currently serves as Estonia's ambassador to the EU. He previously held the position of Head of EU Delegations in North Macedonia as well as in Montenegro.
