Indictment confirmed against Stevo Mumović for crimes against civilians in Vlasenica

(Patria) - The District Court in East Sarajevo confirmed the indictment against Stevo Mumović, who is charged with war crimes against the civilian population committed in May 1992 in the area of Vlasenica.

According to the indictment, Mumović, along with four members of the Public Security Station (SJB) Vlasenica, went to the detention facility located on the ground floor of the SJB Vlasenica building in the evening hours of an undetermined day in early May 1992. At least 12 Bosniak civilians were illegally detained there.

As stated in the indictment, Mumović, along with another police officer, dragged one person out of the detention room and began to beat them. They then took the person to the upper floor of the SJB Vlasenica building, where they continued to beat them, inflicting severe physical and mental suffering and pain.

After that, according to the indictment, Mumović, along with four police officers, began beating another person on the head and body in the corridor of the SJB Vlasenica. The person lost consciousness from the blows. When they regained consciousness, they were taken to an upstairs room where police equipment was stored, and the beating continued with various objects.

“They questioned him simultaneously about who he belonged to and whether he had any weapons, which lasted for about an hour and a half. Then they took him to an adjacent room in the SJB Vlasenica, where a police officer approached him and pressed a pistol to his chest, saying: ‘Will you talk or not?’, continuing to beat him, inflicting severe physical and mental pain, after which they returned him to the detention room of the SJB Vlasenica,” the indictment states.

Mumović is also accused that on May 2, 1992, in Vlasenica, he and another member of the Vlasenica SJB police, dressed in reserve police uniforms and armed with rifles and pistols, went to a house in Vlasenica. They ordered the owner to come with them to give a statement, and then took him in a Golf police vehicle to the SJB Vlasenica. They led him into a hall on the upper floor of the building, where another uniformed reserve police officer was present, and began questioning him about weapons and guards.

“They started beating him with batons, rifle butts, and their hands, and Stevo Mumović showed them his swollen hands, saying: ‘Look what you ‘balijaći’ have done to me’. Then, two more members of the reserve police force entered the hall with masks on their heads and joined in beating the person, whom they knocked to the floor and then began stomping on with their military boots. This lasted for about an hour, during which Stevo Mumović kicked him above the upper lip, where he still has a scar today,” the indictment reads.

As announced, the indictment was confirmed on December 8, 2021.
