It is the first day of Ramadan and once again I remind that the best way to understand the essence of our faith is to return to its fundamentals and follow the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, states in his first part of the Ramadan Chronicles Dr. Tariq Ramadan, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).
- By following the Prophet, peace be upon him, we will also find a connection with the central figure of monotheism that the Qur'an emphasizes, and that is Ibrahim, peace be upon him, the father of humanity. „You are the nation of Ibrahim, he called you Muslims (Qur'an)“. Fasting is a tradition from Ibrahim, peace be upon him. He was the first to respond to Allah's call: „When his Lord said to him, submit, he answered, I submit to the One God, the God of all worlds (Qur'an).“ – states Dr. Ramadan.
He reminds believers that when they fast, they continue a long tradition and connection with their forefather Ibrahim, returning to the pure roots of humanity and monotheism - belief in one God.
- It is from Ibrahim, peace be upon him, that submission to God comes, that which is at the core of Muslims. By fasting we follow in his footsteps – says Dr. Ramadan.
In his first Ramadan Chronicle, he also highlights three important lessons of fasting and its connection to that human tradition.
- First, by responding to the call to fast, we reconcile with our hearts and identify with a very old tradition that goes back to Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and which was continued by Muhammad, peace be upon him, sent as a mercy to the worlds „And We have sent you, Muhammad, only as a mercy to the worlds (Qur'an).“ We Muslims fast just as other nations before us fasted: „Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you (Qur'an).“ – he points out.
Secondly, Dr. Ramadan notes that „fasting as a personal act of the individual“ unites the person with the universal submission to God that has lasted since Ibrahim, peace be upon him, or Abraham.
- The third lesson is that we must understand that our fast, our individual experience, flows into the community of humanity and into brotherhood among people. Let us reflect on this while we fast – concludes Dr. Ramadan, at the end saying: „Never forget to tell those you love that you love them!“
Dr. Ramadan, a professor at Oxford University, Swiss by birth, due to his progressive views and deep understanding of Islam, has become one of the most famous and beloved scholars in the world. Dr. Ramadan sends his Ramadan messages through short video clips in which he gives advice to believers in a simple, but understandable and practical way. The Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP) will, every day of the upcoming month of Ramadan, transmit Dr. Ramadan's messages.
