Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered the mobilization of the army in key cities in the south and east of the country in case of a new rebel offensive, BBC reports, citing the Patria news agency.
Poroshenko said that military units should protect Mariupol, Berdyansk, Kharkiv and the north of the Luhansk region. The Ukrainian president ordered the mobilization after a meeting of security chiefs due to the elections held on Sunday in the rebel areas of Luhansk and Donetsk.
The president said he is committed to the peace process, but proposed the abolition of a key point of that plan. The peace process began on September 5, since when a ceasefire has been in effect.
Poroshenko also proposed the abolition of the law granting special status to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
