Assistant Secretary-General: Both positive and worrying things are happening in BiH

(Patria) - An emergency session of the UN Security Council is underway, discussing the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the request of Russia.

The first to address the attendees was the Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, Miroslav Jenča, who stated that the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs was also invited to brief the Security Council on developments in BiH.

"Since then, we have observed both positive and worrying things," said Jenča.

He also referred to the European Council's decision to open accession negotiations with BiH, emphasizing that there is a consensus among the political leadership that European integration is the best path for a stable and prosperous country.

"At the same time, in recent months, we have witnessed actions and statements that contradict the aforementioned positive progress," Jenča points out.

He also spoke about the observations of the Special Advisers to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, who have paid official visits to BiH and the region in recent years.

They have noted, Jenča states, threats of secessionism, hate speech, denial of genocide, and glorification of war criminals convicted by domestic and international courts.

In his speech, he also recalled the fact that the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice determined that acts of genocide against Bosnian Muslims were committed in and around Srebrenica in July 1995.
