Strengthen oversight of all landfills in the Federation

(Patria) - The Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism has called on cantons, municipalities, and competent inspectorates to strengthen oversight of the legality of operations of all landfills in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The call followed a fire at the landfill in Konjic, which was dangerous to the health of the population and the environment, the ministry announced.

In order to protect human lives and the environment, this ministry specifically demands increased oversight and responsibility of the competent authorities regarding the safety and maintenance of landfills in order to reduce the risks of potential fires and other undesirable situations.

The Federal Ministry notes that institutional responsibilities in the solid waste management sector in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina are divided into several levels. Key actors in the solid waste management sector in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina are cantons and municipalities, which mostly establish their public utility companies for the management of municipal and regional landfills of municipal waste, and organize the work of companies, waste collection and disposal, as well as landfill safety, the ministry announced.
