See the condition of endangered locations in Sarajevo's MZ Širokača

(Patria) - The Mayor of Stari Grad Sarajevo Municipality Irfan Čengić, along with members of the Civil Protection Headquarters and relevant services, visited endangered locations in the local community of Širokača, Komatin and Ablakovina streets, where heavy rainfall has caused additional problems.



In Komatin street, it was particularly noted that the problem with clogged pipes is causing large amounts of water to emerge, posing a threat to nearby houses.

Representatives of KJKP "Vodovod i kanalizacija Sarajevo" (Sarajevo Water supply and Sewerage), as well as the protection and rescue services of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo, are on site working to resolve this issue.

In Ablakovina street, the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad, along with other municipal services, managed to resolve the problem for a private residential building that had water seeping into its basement rooms, and assisted the residents in cleaning their yards of debris carried by the water.



Before the visit, an extraordinary session of the Civil Protection Headquarters of the Municipality of Stari Grad was held, where information on the situation at the Curine njive location due to heavy rainfall lasting for days was discussed. Although no landslides have been activated, the situation requires continuous monitoring and the implementation of preventive measures.

The Municipal Civil Protection Service and other relevant services are constantly on the ground monitoring the situation. It was reconfirmed that landslide remediation work is currently not possible, as the remediation project, being prepared by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Sarajevo, is still in progress.

The project is expected to be finalized in May, and until then, the Faculty of Civil Engineering regularly provides information on soil displacement measurements, based on which appropriate activities are undertaken. Upon completion of the project, the Municipality of Stari Grad is prepared to participate in the remediation of the landslide located in the RS entity.



The session concluded that the Municipal Civil Protection Service should submit a request to the Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad to declare a state of natural disaster, which would create conditions for the engagement of the Federal Civil Protection Administration and the Republika Srpska Civil Protection Administration in the RS entity.

Given that the Municipality of Stari Grad has been covering the costs of renting residential units for the accommodation of evacuated residents since the beginning of the evacuation, the Municipal Civil Protection Service is tasked with submitting a request to the KS Government to secure financial resources to cover these costs.



Furthermore, the KS Institute for Construction offered a certain number of residential units for the accommodation of evacuated residents, but it was determined that the offered units are not habitable.

The Municipal Civil Protection Service will submit a response to the Institute, requesting that the apartments be renovated and reconstructed before use, and financial resources for these works will be requested from the Institute and the KS Government.

The expert service of the Mayor's Cabinet is tasked with re-publishing the Public Call for collecting offers for the allocation of apartments for rent, for the purpose of accommodating evacuated residents.



"We call on all individuals who have spaces for rent to respond to our public call so that we can provide accommodation for those who need it.

The competent services of the Municipality of Stari Grad continue to monitor the situation and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent potential consequences of a possible landslide activation," the Mayor's Cabinet announced.
