Support for Catalan independence decreasing

BARCELONA, (Patria) - Support for Catalan independence has fallen to 40.8 percent, according to the latest survey by the Catalan Government's Public Opinion Study Centre, reports Al Jazeera.

In October last year, 48.7 percent of Catalans supported Catalan independence.

When asked what kind of organizational structure Catalonia should have, 36.3 percent of respondents said it should be an "autonomous community," which is the current system, while this idea was supported by 27.4 percent of Catalans in October 2017.

32.9 percent of Catalans opted for an "independent state," a decrease from 40.2 percent who supported this idea in the previous survey, reported the best-selling Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The survey also shows that 21.9 percent are in favor of a "state within a federal Spain" compared to 19.4 percent in October, while 6.6 percent advocated for a "region" compared to 4.6 percent in October 2017.

Catalonia held an independence referendum in October last year. Following this, the Catalan parliament declared independence on October 27, and the Spanish Government subsequently dissolved the local government and called for early regional elections.

In the new elections, held on December 21, parties advocating for Catalan independence won a majority again.
