Indictment Raised Against Azra Bašić for War Crime

The Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina has raised an indictment against Azra Bašić (born 1959), who is charged with committing war crimes against victims of Serbian ethnicity in the Derventa area during 1992.

The accused is charged with, as a member of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) in the Derventa area, acting contrary to the provisions of the Geneva Conventions on the protection of civilian persons during wartime, Patria reports.

She is charged with committing a war crime in 1992 against victims of Serbian ethnicity from the Derventa area and its surroundings, who were imprisoned in the JNA (Yugoslav People's Army) Hall in Derventa.

According to the indictment, Azra Bašić killed a civilian, a male of Serbian ethnicity, in an extremely cruel manner with a knife, while he was lying on the floor after being severely beaten and abused.

The accused is charged with repeatedly torturing and abusing a large number of prisoners of Serbian ethnicity who were imprisoned in the JNA Hall in Derventa in a cruel manner, inflicting severe physical and psychological injuries, the consequences of which they still feel today.

Azra Bašić was recently extradited from the USA to the judiciary of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and has been in custody since then. The prosecutor's office will prove the allegations of the indictment by calling 32 witnesses and submitting more than 80 pieces of evidence.

The indictment has been forwarded to the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
