Second phase of restoration begins at At mejdan park

The contract for the conservation and restoration works of the "At mejdan" archaeological site in Sarajevo – Phase II was signed today by the Mayor of Old Town Municipality Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, Valida Čelić Čemerlić, Executive Director of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage of Sarajevo Canton, and Ramiz Mulaomerović, Director of the company "Neimari" d.o.o., reports the BH News Agency Patria.

The contract defines the obligations of the signatories in the project worth approximately 174,000 KM, and the deadline for the completion of conservation and rehabilitation works is 45 days.

The first phase was completed in April 2013, and the second phase will involve the arrangement of the mezaristan (cemetery) above which, according to the adopted Project, a pedestrian bridge is planned, from which the complex can be viewed in its entirety.

Otherwise, the "At mejdan" archaeological area, on the left bank of the Miljacka near the Ćumurija Bridge, consists of the remains of the Bakr-baba mosque, madrasa, mekteb (primary school), and harem (courtyard). The mosque and mekteb, vakuf (endowment) of Alija Bakr-baba, were built in the mid-16th century. Over time, a significant educational and cultural center formed around the mosque, consisting of a boys' mekteb, Misirija madrasa, and Kantamiri library. At the end of the 19th century, the mosque was demolished, and soon after, the surrounding educational facilities. Incidentally, this site has been declared a national monument.
