By early 2019, a memorial to Denis, Edita, Selma should be built

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The construction of a memorial to the tragically killed Denis Mrnjavac, Edita Malkoč i Selma Agić, as well as other victims of violence in Sarajevo, was discussed today by the Chairperson of the Assembly of the Sarajevo Canton Ana Babić, the President of the Youth Association "Denis Mrnjavac" Vedran Ljevarević, the Deputy Mayor Milan Trivić and the Advisor to the Mayor of the Centar Municipality Osmo Babić. As announced, the Sarajevo Canton, the City and the Centar Municipality will initiate all necessary activities with the aim of starting its construction as soon as possible, which should be completed by the beginning of next year.

The memorial will be built in the park in front of the Technical School.

As Ljevarević pointed out, the Association had several initiatives for the construction of a monument to Mrnjavac at various locations in the city, but after the tragic deaths of students Edita Malkoč and Selma Agić at the end of 2016, a proposal was made to build a joint memorial in front of the Technical School, near which the lives of these three young people were violently ended.

"We have received consent for the construction of a joint monument from Selma's and Edita's parents as well. The monument will be built as a reminder of the lost youth in our city and as a warning that such atrocities should never happen again, nor cases similar to the one in which the boy Mahir Rakovac tragically died," emphasized Ljevarević.

Deputy Mayor Trivić thanked Chairperson Babić for the initiative and organization of this meeting, and emphasized that this is a very important project for this city and that it should be implemented as soon as possible.

"The City will participate in co-financing the project together with the Canton and the Municipality. It will also carry out the procedure at the City Council, which makes the final decision on proceeding with the construction. We will do everything to make this happen as soon as possible," Trivić stressed on this occasion.

The Centar Municipality will issue urban planning and construction permits for the construction of the monument.

"The Municipality will work quickly and be at the disposal of the project initiators. It is important for us to obtain an adequate conceptual design for the memorial, the creation of which will be entrusted to young people, students of the Faculty of Architecture and the Academy of Fine Arts," stated advisor Babić.

Chairperson Babić said that this is an important project for the entire social community. She pointed out that near the place where the monument will be built, the lives of three young people were brutally ended.

"In the society we live in, there is a lot of peer violence. That is why it is very important to give young people something that will be a warning that such cases should never happen to anyone again," emphasized Chairperson Babić. She added that representatives of the municipalities of Bugojno and Bosanska Krupa, where the tragically deceased Edita and Selma were born, have also expressed readiness to participate in the project.
