Teacher professional development begins: New standard for science teaching comes to life in practice

(Patria) - Professional development for science teachers, dedicated to the implementation of the "Activate Science" manual, began today for biology teachers at "Aleksa Šantić" Elementary School, with the participation of approximately 80 teachers from elementary schools in Sarajevo Canton.

In the coming days, professional development sessions are planned for chemistry and physics teachers, which will be held at "Čengić Vila I" and "Edhem Mulabdić" elementary schools.

Approximately 200 teachers will go through this cycle of professional development.

These professional development sessions represent the final and equally important phase of a systemically rounded process for improving science teaching in Sarajevo Canton, which connects infrastructural investments, modern teaching tools, and professional support for teachers into a unified reform framework.

The Ministry of Education and Upbringing of Sarajevo Canton, with the support of the KS Government, has been implementing the largest investment cycle in the field of natural sciences in the last 20 years since 2022.

Total investments amount to KM 10,200,000, of which KM 2,200,000 was invested in reconstruction, and KM 8,000,000 in modern equipment for biology, chemistry, and physics cabinets in all public elementary schools in Sarajevo Canton, thereby establishing uniform conditions for conducting experimental and research-based teaching.

Infrastructural investments were accompanied by curricular support through the "Activate Science" manuals, developed by the Public Institution Institute for the Development of Pre-university Education of Sarajevo Canton.

The manuals serve as a daily working tool for teachers in modernly equipped cabinets and enable consistent implementation of experimental and research-based teaching in the classroom.

By connecting equipped cabinets, teaching manuals, and professional development for teachers, a new standard for science teaching has been established in Sarajevo Canton, which is clearly visible in everyday teaching practice today.

The process of improving science teaching has also been documented through accompanying video material, which shows the phases of reconstruction and equipping of cabinets, as well as their application in everyday teaching practice.
