Reconstruction of the Music Academy building has begun

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Work has begun on the reconstruction of the Music Academy building, one of the most significant national monuments in the city, built in 1882 according to the design of Josip Vancaš.

The Music Academy was founded in 1955, and the elementary and secondary music schools are also housed in this building today.

Aware of the condition the building has been in for many years, the Municipality of Stari Grad initiated activities to prepare a project for its restoration and secure donor funds, it was announced from this municipality.

The project was prepared by the municipal Department for Local Development and will be carried out in two phases. For the first phase of the works, the Municipality of Stari Grad allocated BAM 50,000. The City Administration of Sarajevo is financing the project with the same amount, and the Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports allocated BAM 47,000.

As stated by the municipal mayor Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, this project has been in preparation for a long time.

"We have been preparing the restoration project for the Music Academy building for a long time. This is a demanding project and a significant investment, and I am glad that this national monument will once again be a representative facility. The Municipality of Stari Grad became one of the largest construction sites this spring because, in addition to four capital projects, the Music Academy building and playgrounds that are planned, this year we will renovate almost 30 streets - some of which are already being worked on, and invest two million marks in the reconstruction of the water supply and sewage network," said Hadžibajrić.

The proposed solution for the Music Academy building, according to the main project prepared by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage of KS, envisages the removal of unstable facade parts, and the creation of new elements based on the damaged ones found on the building, as well as the restoration of damaged and stable architectural decoration.

Finishing work will be carried out on the entire facade surface. The replacement of sheet metal flashings and cornices on the entire surface of the building is planned, as well as work on the original carpentry.

The works are being carried out by the company Bišina Mostar, licensed for the restoration of national monuments.

Negotiations with donors are underway to finance the second phase of the works, which will include: replacement of carpentry, replacement of mechanical installations, and roof renovation.
