Development of Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy for Bosnia and Herzegovina Begins

(Patria) - The Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina has started preparing a draft of the Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy for Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period 2026-2030.

The strategy will be developed in cooperation with relevant institutions at all levels of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as with international organizations, ensuring a comprehensive, coordinated, and inclusive approach.

In the first phase of developing the strategy, representatives of state ministries and other institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina will participate, with the initial meeting held today in Konjic.

The development of the strategy represents a key step in fulfilling Bosnia and Herzegovina's international obligations under the United Nations Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, a global agreement that defines guidelines for reducing losses caused by natural and other disasters.

The proposed strategy will be based on the four priorities for action of the Sendai Framework, ensuring a systemic and long-term sustainable approach to disaster risk management in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In line with the European Union accession process, and as a full member of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, Bosnia and Herzegovina recognizes the need to align state policies with European and global standards in this area.

In the context of increasingly frequent and intense disasters, primarily caused by climate change, the development of the strategy represents an important step towards strengthening prevention, resilience, and preparedness of society, in accordance with international obligations and modern approaches to risk management.

The strategy development process is supported through the Joint Programme "Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable Development in Bosnia and Herzegovina", funded by the Government of Switzerland, the United Nations, and authorities in BiH, and implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO, and FAO, in partnership with domestic institutions.
