Tribute to Srebrenica Victims: Šešelj's Radicals Glorified Mladić and Sang Chetnik Songs

In the center of Belgrade on Friday evening, symbolically at 11:07 PM, tribute was paid to the Srebrenica victims by lighting candles next to slips of paper with the numbers of the deceased written on them, with a police cordon separating participants and supporters of the #sedamhiljada action from members of extremist groups and members of the Serbian Radical Party, reports the Patria news agency.

The #sedamhiljada performance was supposed to be held on July 11 in front of the Serbian Parliament, but the Serbian Ministry of Interior banned all gatherings in Belgrade on the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica crime, explaining that the safety of participants would be endangered because five gatherings had been announced for the same day.

Last night's gathering was held an hour before the official start of the ban, and the police set up a cordon on the plateau in front of the Presidency of Serbia and the City Assembly.

The police prevented dozens of gathered right-wingers and extremists, as well as supporters of the Serbian Radical Party, including radical leader and Hague indictee Vojislav Šešelj, from approaching citizens and members of non-governmental associations who were lighting candles.

The extremists, shouting the names of Hague indictees Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić, sang Chetnik songs, and several were arrested, but more serious incidents were avoided.
