Platform for Progress: Support for workers' protests

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - On the occasion of International Labour Day yesterday, May 1, 2021, trade union protests were held. In the complex and institutionally ruined Bosnian-Herzegovinian society, it is not easy to find answers and solutions to many issues. Nevertheless, it is natural that after yesterday's protests, we all ask ourselves whether the political elite even hears the voice of the trade unions in the fight for workers' rights, and whether they have a real role in the labour market in the future, according to the statement of the Platform for Progress.

"Considering the gross exploitation of workers and the injustices they suffer, thereby violating their fundamental rights guaranteed by the laws of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the answer to the above question should be: 'YES'. Trade unions have a future and must have a greater role and influence on processes in society. The Platform for Progress, in addition to the numerous tasks that the state must resolve in this area, believes that it is also necessary to ensure the neutrality, independence and apolitical nature of trade unions, as well as space for trade unions to participate equally in shaping relations in the labour market and to realize their rights guaranteed by the Constitution and international acts," the statement said.

The Platform expresses its support for workers' protests as an expression of dissatisfaction with the current situation and their demands for a fairer distribution and better working conditions, while respecting their independence and right to fight for better working conditions.

"We, the working citizens, are those who not only create new values every day through our work, but also preserve the honor and values acquired through the struggle of those before us," the statement said.
