Pisonero: EU sanctions framework is considered by the Council, we will not speculate

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The European Union (EU) has taken note of the US administration's decision to sanction Milorad Dodik, member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and president of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats. However, there is no confirmation from Brussels that the EU would adopt the same measures.

When asked about possible EU actions against individuals who undermine the functionality of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ana Pisonero, spokesperson for the European Commission (EC), reminded that Brussels has a "broad range of means and instruments, including the sanctions framework" dating back to 2011.

She emphasized that the EU encourages finding a way out of the political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina and putting an end to all "unacceptable initiatives that call into question the country's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity."

"The stability and prosperity of BiH are at stake, as is the entire process of Bosnia and Herzegovina's integration into the EU and its future within the EU. The EU continues to encourage leaders to resolve the situation through dialogue, to allow Bosnia and Herzegovina to move past the stalemate, and, at the same time, to ensure the necessary space for the country to turn towards constructive agendas that lie within the EU perspective.

At the same time, the EU, as you know, has a wide range of tools, and all instruments remain available. You know well that since 2011, the EU has had a sanctions framework that allows for restrictive measures to be imposed on individuals who seriously threaten security in BiH, undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement. Such matters require adoption by the Council," Pisonero said.

She also emphasized that only reform programs can guarantee EU assistance, including ensuring economic and investment plans.

"Bosnia and Herzegovina risks losing a significant amount of aid if actions are not taken. We think it is important to state our position, and our position regarding the fight against corruption and organized crime is clear. This is a very important aspect when we talk about the accession process, which is monitored. This is a very important problem, and we will continue to monitor it.

As you know, discussions about possible or restrictive measures that are underway are confidential within the Council until a decision is adopted, which is then communicated by the Council. We never speculate about them publicly beforehand, and I don't think it's possible to say anything more at this moment," Pisonero concluded.
