Fifth Day of Youth Protests in Sarajevo: Demand for Effective Investigation into Tram Accident

(Patria) - A new youth gathering is scheduled for noon in front of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking the fifth day since the tragic tram accident that occurred on February 12. In this accident, Erdoan Morankić, a 23-year-old student at the Academy of Fine Arts UNSA, lost his life, and 17-year-old Ella Jovanović was seriously injured.

The protests have been ongoing since Friday, February 13, and are mostly attended by university and high school students, as well as numerous citizens of Sarajevo.

Yesterday's protests saw the reading of demands in front of the Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor's Office building.

The four demands include full transparency of the investigation, release of the tram's accident footage, data on tram maintenance, removal of unsafe vehicles from traffic, specifically old trams, systemic responsibility, and a long-term solution, namely the construction of a quality and safe public transport system.

Protest participants stated yesterday that they will not give up, and according to the claims of several students, attempts are being made to prevent their participation in protests, with threats of unexcused absences, reduced conduct grades, or even expulsion from school.

Yesterday's protests concluded with a call for the Minister of Education, Naida Hota-Muminović, to resign from her position.

He will hold a press conference today, and given that he submitted his written resignation to the Speaker of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly, the deadlines for scheduling the Assembly session begin to run.

According to the Law on the Government of Sarajevo Canton, from the day of a vote of no confidence or the dismissal of the government, there is a 60-day period for the appointment of a new Sarajevo Canton Government.

The Minister of Transport of Sarajevo Canton, Adnan Šteta, who is also the president of the SDP BiH Sarajevo Cantonal Board, stated on Monday evening that a new Sarajevo Canton Government will be formed by a new majority.
