Patria wishes you a Happy International Labour Day

(Patria) - Today is May 1st - International Labour Day, observed on the day when workers in Chicago in 1886 began fighting for an eight-hour workday through strikes and protests.

International Labour Day represents a day of solidarity for working people worldwide. It has been celebrated since 1890 following a decision made at the 1st Congress of the Second International in Paris in July 1889.

The occasion for this decision was the bloodily suppressed strike of 40,000 Chicago workers on May 1, 1886. They demanded eight hours of work, eight hours of rest, and eight hours for cultural development.

The Congress decided that every year on May 1st, the working class would manifest its solidarity through demonstrations in the fight for the eight-hour workday.
